Vault Shadow Folder Cache

Post by jwarnock » Wed Mar 08, 2006 6:44 pm

The Vault Shadow Folder Cache created by the NetworktService has grown pretty large and it doesn't seem to clean up on it's own. Can this be deleted periodically? This cache is different from the Vault Shadow Folders which I keep on a different drive. Also can I redirect the VSF Cache folders to a different driver or folder? Thanks for any help.

Yes, both of these are possible.

You can delete the cache, but you probably want to do it during a down time, because the next time the DB changes, it will need to refetch all the baseline files for every shadowed file, which could take quite awhile.

And, starting in 3.1, you can change the location of the cache in Tools->Options->Local Files->Cache/Backup Locations. You should login as admin on the server machine, which is the account used to request shadow folders, and this is a setting that affects only the machine where it is set. This will cause all your client state and working folder associations to be removed, but Shadow Folders itself should recover its own associations.

If you want to change cache locations, go ahead and do that first, as it will have the same effect as deleting the cache for the shadow folder client. After shadow folders appears to be working again, you can safely delete the old cache without affecting anything else.

The location for the Shadow Folder cache file can be changed in the Shadow Folder web.config file in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Vaultservice\VaultShadowfolder. Uncomment this line and configure the path you want:
<!-- <add key="shadowfolder_cachepath" value="c:\Program Files\Sourcegear\Vault Shadow Folder Cache" /> -->
