++. Please, please, PLEASE consider fixing this before 4.0. This is a MAJOR headache for developers like myself that use both a workstation for primary development (70%) and a laptop for on-site work (30%)

VSS (at least under VS2003, haven't tested with VS2005) could tell the difference between two different machines with the same user and would not show the checked out files as checked out on the machine in which they weren't actually checked out to. So it appears this isn't a limitation in VS.

I'll add your vote, and we do plan to at least look at this before 4.0. Whether it makes it in before then depends on the severity/risk of the fix.

The Vault GUI doesn't have this problem. I only use the Vault GUI -- it would be impossible for me to use Visual Studio because of this bug.

After looking into this, it looks like we'll be able to address it in our next dot release, which will be a month or so away.

Great news!!! I knew you guys could do it! I love the program but this one bug has been biting my butt for a while.

I am rather frustrated with the response time though. I brought this issue to your attention on October 16th. It's taken till February to even investigate it. This wasn't a feature request, this was a bug that could cause data loss. Our customers would hang us if we responded like that!

I'm also a bit pieved that I can't log in to my old "eduphoria" account even after I requested a new password. Was I dissabled because I was upset that I would have to wait for 4.0 to get a "point revision" bug fix? Customers are allowed to be upset, it's your job to make them happy so they keep giving you money.

Again, thanks for fixing this. Source Safe doesn't even begin to compare and you're reasonably priced. I love it. I'm glad I can start recommending it again.

FYI, 3.1.8 now contains the fix for this problem. Go to http://www.sourcegear.com/vault/downloads.html to download it.

In the past, I experienced this problem and problems similar to this, and I got around it by creating a separate Vault user name for my laptop.

The best behavior, in my mind, would be to let Vault shelf versions of files on a per-user basis. This way, I could be working on my desktop, shelf, but not check in, the files I am in the middle of working on, and then pick up on my laptop with the shelved versions of the files. This way, I can actually move machines without having to check everything in, which is impossible if I'm in the middle of something.

What are the chances of a feature like that ever existing?

We like the idea of a Shelf feature, and it is on our TODO list. However, it is a pretty big feature, and we don't have it scheduled for a release yet.

We'll add your vote, and hopefully it will eventually make it into the product.
