Does the client & the server version numbers have to be the same or can be different without breaking compatibility?
Currently we're at 3.1.2, but would like to upgrade to 3.1.6.
the problem is that clients have to be pre-packaged & so it takes longer then just upgrading the server. That's why we were planning staged deployment, but would like to know for sure that it'd not cause any issues.
Also were there any database changes between 3.1.2 & 3.1.6?
client/server version compatibility?

There were some database changes between 3.1.2 and 3.1.6. When you run the 3.1.6 installer, it will upgrade your Vault database.
For best results, client and server should be the same version, but your 3.1.2 clients will still be able to connect to Vault 3.1.6 until you are able to get them upgraded.
