Network dude blew away VSS

Post by dbirley » Mon Oct 03, 2005 12:06 pm

Netwoek dude blew away VSS - trying to save some space. Thought that using SoS, we didn't need it. Unbelievable, but NO BACKUP. Full Christian vocabulary temporarily on hold.

Would I be correct in assuming that SoS is only relying on the VSS DATA files, or does it require part of the VSS engine too? I am talking about running on a server, and it is version 4.1.

Ouch!

SOS provides remote access to a VSS database; it does not store any source data itself.

For the SOS Server to work, you need a copy of the VSS Explorer Client on the SOS Server machine. SOS uses the Automation Component provided by the VSS Client to communicate with the VSS database. The VSS database does not have to be on the SOS Server machine, but it needs to be on the same LAN as the SOS Server.

Assuming you have a VSS database. :(
