obliterate tab hangs admin tool?

Post by grant » Tue Sep 27, 2005 5:30 am

hi, i had an import that went wrong today (as part of a demo, of course), and wanted to obliterate to try again. i went to obliterate tab and, with the combo, i selected my repository. the list box then filled up with items and started flashing as though it was refreshing itself over and over within an infinite loop. the tool appeared to be hung after this. unable to switch tabs or close gracefully.

what now? if it is a GUI issue, can i obliterate from a command prompt somehow instead?

ps. version is 3.1.2

Obliterate is a very very slow operation, so it is probably the case that if you were obliterating a large number of files/folders, that it looked hung, but was chugging away in the background. You might verify this by checking the SQL server machine CPU, if that is available to you.

no that's not it. i didn't get as far as to make a selection from the list or click the button to start obliterating. all i did was select my repository in the combo:

Yes, use the command line client "vault obliterate". See "Vault help obliterate" for command usage.

Yep, "vault help" will give you a list of cool things to do. :)

With respect to the flashing on the obliterate tab, the list does appear to be flashing while it is being filled on some systems. It's possible that you have a very large number of deleted items, and that the list is still being filled.

Well I wasn't sure how long you waited. It certainly shouldn't take hours to populate that list unless you've got some really extraordinary circumstances. You'll probably be able to do what you need to do using the command-line client, but if you do find that the Admin Client is flashing indefinitely, let me know.

ok, thanks. it's good to know that 2 hours is unreasonably long. so i'll leave it running for 2 hours tomorrow, and if it's still flashing, then i'll conclude that it really is stuck.
well, that's me for tonight, i'll post again tomorrow to let youz know how it went.
ps. can we have a sleeping emoticon please?

ian, you the man. after just 13 minutes, the flashing stopped, hourglass went away and i was able to use the GUI again.

but please log at least one bug report on my behalf.
(1) the flashing. please get someone to check whether you are using BeginUpdate and EndUpdate when populating the listview.
(2) a 13 minute wait surely calls for a progress bar
