Abort doesn't abort search

What operations are you supposed to be able to abort?

Get Latest Version .. the abort can take a long time (25 minutes+)

And can the Search Pane's search be aborted .. i.e, if you've said Search for Any status, all Users ... it can take forever, does the abort even try to abort this?

The search pane doesn't respond to Abort, and, as you've noticed, it does take awhile for many commands to abort. This is a known deficiency that we hope to fix in a future release.
