SourceGear Vault Client
Version 3.0.7 (2863)
What I did:
I had a directory in Vault whose inherited working folder did not exist. I used Set Working Folder to browse to the directory where a local copy is stored. Then I see in the file status column in the Vault client "Unknown" for most of my files, and "Missing" for one (which isn't there in the working folder).
I right-click the one of interest, which says "Unknown", and select "Show Differences" to see how my copy compares to the source control version, and I press Ok at the options dialog for defaults, and then I get that error
File Unknown File could not be found
I can see the file of interest in the working folder, so I don't know why Vault cannot find it, nor why Vault doesn't give its name instead of "Unknown File" ?

found a workaround
I found a workaround.
Right-click the file and choose Show Differences, and then click the radio button "The current version in the repository now".
Then the difference works, and moreover, now the original bug is fixed; I can now go back and do the Show Differences without adjusting the options and it works now.

Just to follow up: The reason this didn't work is because the status was Unknown and the default diff behavior is to diff against the last version retrieved from the repository. An Unknown file doesn't have a last version retrieved (e.g., there is no baseline file), so it doesn't know what to compare it against. Once the Unknown is resolved, it can do the comparison.
