It would make more sense (to me) to have the status drop down box entries sorted alphabetically like nearly all other drop down lists in the modify item Dragnet screen. I believe that the status drop down entries are currently sorted in the order that they were added to the system.

I have logged your request.
The status values are sorted by their ID. We set it up this way so the default Open, Completed and Verified values would be in the order of "work flow". And the Unconfirmed value is at the beginning to be consistent with the other lists (Unknown is first). But other values are just in the order that they are added, which really isn't in any logical order unless you add them that way.
