Remote SQL Server?

Post by Paulie » Sat Jun 04, 2005 8:30 pm

Hi,

Is it possible to install the Vault server on a local server, but to set the SQL Server that the files are stored on as a remote (web) SQL Server? I have 1.5GB of SQL Server space in a web account, they won't let me install the Vault server but they don't care if I use the database as a vault DB.

I already have Vault setup locally and I don't want to risk my local install to try a remote one.

Thanks,

Paul

Sure, it can be done. In the installer, when the "Connect to SQL server" dialog comes up, just point it to the remote SQL server. It's explained in more detail in the install guide.

Thanks Jeremy, I had a try at doing it but unfortunately I had one problem - the name of my database on the web host is fixed, so I can't use the default Vault database.

Is there a way to get around this?

No, there is no way to get around this for the default install. The normal way that people do this is to install Vault to a local DB where they have full control, and then backup/restore the database to the remote server.

Once you get the DB in the right place and Vault installed, it is possible to change the db server that Vault connects to, as well as the database name to connect to.
