cannot start service on windows 2000

When I attempt to start the service, I get the following error:

Could not start the SourceOffSite 4 Server service on Local Computer.
The service did not return an error. This could be an internal Windows error or an internal service error.
If the problem persists, contact your system administrator.

Also, I do not see a log file in my SourceOffSite Server directory.

Is the service being operated by the local system account or by a domain account? If the log isn't being generated, it suggests that there may be a permissions problem where by the service owner can't write the log to the SOS server directory.
