Feature request: constrain space used by right-side menu

The right-hand side menu (Recent items... My recent) seems to occupy an horizontal space which is proportional to the full page size. When I'm running in full screen, this is about twice as much space as it needs. This is very frustrating when working in batch edit mode, where the dropdown lists are so narrow that it's impossible to read their contents: every pixel counts.

Can it be constrained to use only as much as it requires?
