Vault Newbie - explanation of Label, Branch, Pin

Hello: The topic may also be called VSS newbie - what are Label, Branch and Pin? I recall reading some nice articles written by somebody here at Sourcegear about the purposes and uses of these features. Can somebody point me in the right direction of hwere I can get better information on best practices using these features. Thanks a bunch!
