SOS Server Maximums?

Post by Steven Carter » Thu Mar 24, 2005 4:25 pm

Hi I was looking for a specs sheet or limitations info for SOS 4.1.

Specifically: What's the maximum number of users, databases, file size, database size, etc.

Also, what are your recomended limit of the number of users and databases?

We currently have a 50 user license. 28 of our 64 repositories are listed in SOS server. We have it hosted on a Win2003 Standard Server with a 380Gb volume. Our 64 repositories take up about 80Gb of that volume.

We just bought another company and they're looking into moving another 50 users and 20 databases (about 40Gb) over to this same server.

At what point should I start looking for additiional server hardware?

We haven't tested pushing SOS to its limits, since a lot depends on a particular team's environment. But we can tell you what we know based on user experience.

If you have more than 50 users and/or 30 repositories, it's best to split up the load between multiple SOS Servers. You can install SOS Servers on more than one machine on the LAN and point them to the same databases. Better yet, use some SOS Servers for certain databases. Most likely all your developers don't need access to all the databases. You can split up your licenses among the servers.

Regarding database size, this is a VSS issue. We've seen recommendations that a VSS database should be no more than 2 GB in size.
