The SOS Server does not need to be installed on the same machine as
the VSS database, as long as it is on the same LAN.
We recommend the following steps when configuring a VSS database on a
different machine from the SOS Server:
1. specify path to 'srcsafe.ini' file in Server Manager using a UNC
pathname. (The UNC pathname will be used if you browse for the
'srcsafe.ini' file through Network Neighborhood as opposed to a
mapped drive).
2. configure the SOS Server service to run as a Domain account rather
than a System Account. This can be configured on Windows NT
by going to Control Panel --> Services --> SourceOffSite Server -->
Startup --> This Account. On Windows 2000, go to Control Panel ->
Administrative tasks -> Services -> SourceOffSite -> (right-click)
Properties -> Logon. Make sure it is set to a valid network user
name which is authorized to access the VSS database. For example:
domainname\username.
