Is it possible to branch individual files (like VSS)?

Client + Server 3.07.

Vault seems to allow branching on the entire folder, not at the file level. Can you please confirm and if it is so, is there any reason?

Thanks in advance.

No. Vault can branch either a file or folder.

It would be nice if branching a folder gave you the option to populate that folder either with branches or shares of the files, instead of always with branches. This would let you branch the folder itself and then the individual file that needed to be different.

I ran into this need recently. I created a folder in one tree, and shared it to another tree. At some point, I needed to make one file different in the other tree. Since I shared the folder instead of creating a new folder and sharing the individual files, I couldn't do it. I eventually ended up branching the folder, and having to merge branches to keep the two trees in sync. Fortunately, the second tree was being shut down in a week, or this would have been really annoying.
