newbie and file status

I just added some folders and files to vault in the default repository. All the file statuses were "missing" after it completed. I then set the working folder to my local folder and then the statuses changed to "unknown". If I run diff on a file the status will then go blank but just for the one file. Is this normal behavior? Thanks.

Yes, that's normal behavior. If you had set the working folder first, the status would have immediately gone blank.
