How do work items get labeled when builds are labeled?

Post by ChrisBBL » Fri Jan 06, 2012 12:26 pm

I'm using the integrated work items in Vault Professional. When I commit a pending change set related to a work item, I check the work item so it gets closed.

When I release a version, I create a label for the version. I was thinking that the label would apply to any work items closed since the last label, that way the work items would be tied to the version they appeared in.

How can I tell what work items are linked to what version?

Labels only apply to source code.

Some options that might help you tie work items to versions might be:
- Make a milestone that corresponds to the version you want those items to be in.
- Use one of the custom fields in work items to store the version.
- When you check in against a bug, if you use the Browse button for the bug item and add the version to the comments, the version should show up in the comments of the work items. That way, when you search for work items and enter in the version number, it should pick up which comments have the version number.
- Create a tag for the version number you want work items connected to.

Thanks for those suggestions.

Is there a best practices or workflow document that explains the proper way to use the work items to track changes?

We don't have a best practices article on that at this time, but our demo video on its use may help: http://www.sourcegear.com/video/forvault.html.
