anti virus settings with vault

Post by nickkovac » Thu Jun 24, 2004 9:53 am

In one article Linda mentions about the optimum settings for anti-virus for SOS. What are the comparable settings/recommendations for vault?

Nick

From Linda...

Real time anti-virus protection can have a severe impact on SOS Server
operations. These programs check every read/write and SOS does a lot of
that. Microsoft's web site discusses the impact on VSS at this link:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... roduct=vss

Our customers have used various approaches to this problem:

-- Turn off real-time virus protection and do periodic scans instead.
(maybe a bit risky these days)

-- Exclude the VSS directory and the SOS Temp directory.

-- Move the VSS database to a network drive which is excluded from all
virus scanning.

--Rather than restricting virus checking in certain directories, you might
try configuring "real-time protection" to only look at extensions for virus
carrying file (i.e. .exe, .pif, etc).

Although virus scanning can take system resources, we haven't had specific reports of Vault slowdowns due to antivirus scanning.

It's really an issue of MS SQL Server and virus scanning, so we don't have specific recommendations. If you search Google, you'll find some users exclude the database files. Microsoft's KB says you have to assess risk vs performance. We do suggest excluding Vault's working directory.
