Binary Files Cannot Be Merged

I have a VS.NET vbproj file that I would like to merge but cannot because Vault claims it is a binary file. I don't see any binary data in it. Looks like text to me. What's going on? What can I do?

Thanks, that explains it. The message about being binary when it wasn't was confusing.
