Did you configure the email setting for SMTP server? If so, does the Dragnet Server's log have any indication of a problem? The default location of the Dragnet log is in %windir%\Temp\SGDragnet

Yes - I configured the SMTP settings.

I turned the log level to Debug. Here is a snippet:

I noticed that after the AddItem call there is no call the an SMTP function (maybe debugging is not that fine grained..) Anyways I hope the log helps.

Thanks,
Travis

Since the email notification routine lives in its own thread, there won't be any log entries, unless there is an error.

How did you configure the user's setting under the project email preferences?

Thanks - I figured it out.

1) Didn't have notifications turned on

2) Then there was an SMTP relay problem with IIS

How do you solve the SMTP relay problem in IIS? I have set the email notification for the user but still do not receive any email notification.

Go into IIS' admin tool. Look at the properties for the SMTP server. On the access tab, there is a button for Relaying. The options can be controlled from within there.

Hi,

I am lost here. My email server is hosted by other company. I have setup my own data server to host the dragnet and vault. Follows the help file provided, i have entered all the information in setting up the SMTP Server. In fact, i just copy the same setting from my email account in Outlook express. I have tried to set the e-mail Relay in the data server to grant access from the client PC.
However, i still could not receive any notification when the item is modified.

What is the SMTP server you are using?

Is it a server controlled by the company hosting your email? If so, what is their relaying configuration? Are they set up to accept SMTP requests on behalf of the Dragnet server?

Perhaps you could give a complete description of your configuration.

I have setup a POP3 mail server running on W2k3 in a local server.
Server Name:csd-data-server
Authentication Method: Local Windows Accounts
Server Port:110
Always create an associated user for new mailboxes

Created a new domain: csd.com
2 mailboxes - admin, joel

*I have managed to send & retrieve email by using MS Outlook after adding the above mail server in MS Outlook.

For the SMTP Virtual Server Properties:
Access->Authentication - anonymous acess

In the Dragnet Setup page, i have entered the following data:
SMTP Server:csd-data-server
Return Address : admin@csd.com
Dragnet URL for links: http://csd-data-server/Dragnet
SMTP Server Port:25
SMTP Connection Timeout:30
SMTP Authentication Type:None

With the above setting, i still can't receive any email notification. Wonder why ... :(

If you open a command prompt, and open a telnet session csd-data-server on port 25, do you get a login ( "telnet csd-data-server 25" )?

Is there anything in the dragnet server's log regarding some kind of error?

No, i didn't get a login. This is what the screen looks like at the console:
220 csd-data-server Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version:6.0.3790.0 ready at Wed, 22 Dec 2004 13:18:04 -0800

There is no indication of any error in the server's log. Listed here is the log recording the modification of an item:

The server will only log errors on sending email.

If you pick a user, where is the destination mailbox? Is it on csd-data-server? Also, if you look at the project settings for that user, what are all the settings for email notification?

I am having similar trouble trying to set up email delivery for Vault. I keep seeing the following message in Vault's server log:

---12/22/2004 5:00:53 PM --()-- Error sending mail to dave.schulte@targetsoftware.com at SMTP server otter
----12/22/2004 5:00:53 PM --()-- Could not access 'CDO.Message' object.
----12/22/2004 5:00:53 PM --()-- Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.
----12/22/2004 5:00:53 PM --()-- The message could not be sent to the SMTP server. The transport error code was 0x800ccc15. The server response was not available

I'm not sure what the "CDO.Message" object is.

Dave:

According to this OLEXP: Outlook Express Error Codes, it seems a socket could not be opened to the SMTP server.

Searching Google Groups on the error message suggests SMTP is not running on port your specified port ( default 25) , an application (McAfee Anti-virus) / firewall is blocking access to the specified port, or the Vault ( Dragnet ) server is not connecting in the specified manner ( authenticated vs. non-authenticated access to the SMTP server ).
