Feature request: don't take over file associations

Post by anentropic » Wed Jun 24, 2015 1:55 pm

I just installed DiffMerge on OSX, via the pkg installer

It has taken over file associations for .wsdl files (and probably others I haven't noticed yet) without asking me

This is bad manners and also a bit of a puzzling decision since DiffMerge isn't a good choice for opening arbitrary files with - if I double click a wsdl now DiffMerge doesn't show me anything except a dialog asking me to pick something to diff it against. Pretty useless.

There are no actions in the install that would cause that to happen. I've tried to reproduce the behavior you are seeing without specifically setting the file association manually.

When opening DiffMerge, the correct thing to see is a window where two files can be selected. If you had one files selected already, it should show up as one path, and then you need to select the other.

As a solution, you can perform an Open With, select the proper program to open the file with, and click the option to always open with that program. That will change the file association.
