Dreaded Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Here is the scenario....

We currently run Vault 6.0.0 477 and want to move from an old SQL Server to a new one.

Here is what we did:

1) I asked the DBA to copy the vault DBs from old to new

2) Installed IIS 7 on new

3) Installed .NET 4.0 on new

When we try to install Vault 6.0.0 server we get the error:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Vault Standard Setup is exiting due to a failure or cancellation. Error Code = -1280

prior to finishing. I am unable to find any logs.

One thing I notice is we don't have the same permissions set up for vault DBs on new server as we did for old. Should there be specific credentials we need for DB access? Any help would be appreciated... we just want to stand this up on the new server to see if it works.

What is the OS and SQL version on the new server?

Is SQL on the same server or different server?

Try running a command prompt as administrator, and use the command

I'm working with another person here on the install, but here is the info:

MS SQL server 2008 R2 (63-bit)

Is SQL on the same server or different server? On same server.

I tried run cmd as administrator and it gave the same error message.

Would you be able to consider upgrading to Vault 6.1.0? That is a free upgrade. I'm not sure if it will fix your issue, but it will be a different download to try.

Also, the next time you try installing, make a text file called MSIlog.txt and put it next to the Vault installer. Then change your install command to

msiexec /i "Vault path and installer name.msi" /l "path and MSIlog.txt"

With the upgrade, would we need to update the license key as well or can the existing one be used?

Vault 6.0.x to Vault 6.1.0 will not require a new license key.

However, if you are moving to a different version of Vault, then you will need a new license key to enter. In this case, contact our sales department through email : sgstore at sourcegear.com and they can assist.
