Removing (Thinning out) local files

Post by kfinke@creditinfonet.com » Wed Oct 13, 2004 12:02 pm

We use the option to keep our local files under our working folders. That's great and all, but our working folders now contain hundreds of thousands of files and the space is getting out of hand.

I know that I could delete all the files and revert to an unknown status. However, wouldn't it be possible to delete all but the latest versions of the working files and be OK? If so, how would one go about this?

Vault currently doesn't have any feature like this, but it will soon (it's scheduled to be included in the next release after 3.0). Vault needs to keep the baseline version of each file in storage, as well as any versions a merge was done from (so the merge can be undone). Deleting all old versions of a file may cause big problems. At this time, the best strategy is something like the following:
  • Check in any changes you have in your working folders
  • Rename the base working folder (if you had $/trunk set to C:\trunk, rename the disk folder to C:\trunk.old)
  • Perform a new Get Latest Version on the working folder (this will create a new C:\trunk)
  • Delete C:\trunk.old
