Shadow Folders not working

Post by gannet » Thu Apr 11, 2013 4:42 am

Hi,

After a change of NAS drive last year our Shadow Folders haven't been working.

I initially thought it was just permissions, but that's been sorted (I think).

All we get in the Shadowfolder service log file is the following:
10/04/2013 17:35:16 <generic>: [<No Name>:5548] Vault's Shadow Folders attempting get (by Delta) for $
10/04/2013 17:35:19 <generic>: [<No Name>:5548] Vault Shadow Folder encountered a problem: [VaultClientOperationsLib.GetLatestVersionFailedException: Exception of type 'VaultClientOperationsLib.GetLatestVersionFailedException' was thrown.

at VaultClientOperationsLib.ClientInstance.Get(VaultClientFile[] files, Boolean forceLatest, MakeWritableType makeWritable, SetFileTimeType setFileTime, MergeType merge, OverwritePrompt PromptData)
at VaultShadowFolder.VaultShadowFolderRepository.VaultShadowFolderRepositoryProc()]Exception of type 'VaultClientOperationsLib.GetLatestVersionFailedException' was thrown.

at VaultClientOperationsLib.ClientInstance.Get(VaultClientFile[] files, Boolean forceLatest, MakeWritableType makeWritable, SetFileTimeType setFileTime, MergeType merge, OverwritePrompt PromptData)
at VaultShadowFolder.VaultShadowFolderRepository.VaultShadowFolderRepositoryProc()

10/04/2013 17:35:38 <generic>: [<No Name>:4904] SimpleLogger finalized
What could be going wrong and how should we fix it?

Thanks in advance,

-- Peter.

It looks like the Shadow Folder service may be having a problem updating the files in the shadow folder because it can't determine the status of the files.

What version of Vault are you using? What OS is Vault installed on?

Are there any errors in the Vault Server log that correspond to the failure? The Vault server log is called sgvault.log and is in %windir%\temp\sgvault on the server machine.

Thanks for the reply,

Vault version: 5.0.3.18802
OS: Windows Server 2008 Standard SP2
SQL version: MSSQL 2008 R2
Extract from the sgvault for the same time period:

all similar stuff in there for other time periods.

Just for fun I added a local (rather than network) shadow folder with the same result.

Thanks for your help,

I'd suggest we schedule a remote assist session where I can take a closer look.

Thanks to Linda for the help yesterday. The local folders populated fine after your help. Unfortunately the remote ones still didn't want to play.

This time for a different error though and it was permissions again, so I did a search to reset it all up, following:

This thread
this knowledgebase

however I used a version of the IdentitySwitcher mentioned at the end of the latter link... which obviously wasn't suited to our Version of Vault - we then couldn't log on at all!

I uninstalled the server (keeping the database) and reinstalled (repair didn't work) and one tweak on a directory later and we are back up and running. As a bonus the remote shadow folders are now working again :)

Thanks for the update. Glad shadow folders are working now.

We'll update that post about the Identity Switcher.
