Upgrade from 3.5.1 to 4.0.x fails

I have been trying to upgrade my client software to 4.0.2 from 3.5.1 and the installattion fails. During the installation registration process or shortly after, the install program rolls back any changes made and then presents me with an error dialog box that says the installation has failed. I did read the install notes listed in the installer and tried the following without success.
1. Install into same directory.
2. Install into different directory.
3. Remove 3.5.1 first (this is after a reinstall of 3.5.1 to get things working again.)
4. Roll back Windows XP and tried 1-3 above.
5. Remove 3.5.1 and then go through registry and remove any SourceOffSite and SOS entries for the program. Try to install 4.0.2 and get another failure.

I have reinstalled 3.5.1 and can use that verison okay, but would still like to upgrade to 4.0.2. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

What was the exact error message when the installation failed?

What version of .NET framework is on the SOS Server machine?

In Step 4, what do you mean by "roll back XP?

Are there any error messages in the Windows Event viewer regarding the failed installation?

SOS 4.0 uses Windows Installer and we've had a few reports of problems with installation on machine where Windows Installer didn't exist or was not functioning properly. SOS 3.5.x uses a different type of installer.

Let me know what you find out.

Rollback XP, meant I did a system restore to a point before attempting SOS installation.

.NET Framework is 1.1 on the machine for the client SOS program.
