If your SOS Server Service hangs or crashes and needs to be restarted in order for users to be able to log in again, you may be experiencing a concurrency crash due to a bug in the Visual SourceSafe Automation Component.
If VSS 6.0d is installed on the SOS Server machine, see this post for a registry edit that works around the bug:

If you are not using 6.0d, you might be experiencing a different bug that also caused a crash during concurrent usage. Microsoft issued a Hotfix for this for VSS version 6.0c:

In some cases, the SOS server machine itself might crash or lose network connectivity. This is usually due to a combination of SOS 3.5.x and dual network cards on the SOS server machine. See this KB article for more information.
