Working folder state information is incompatible

My machine crashed while I had a project open in Visual Studio and now I get the following error on every file:

The working folder state information is incompatible with this version of Vault. Please choose a different working folder path. The specific compatibility exception was: Could not detect the file type in the supplied stream.

I deleted the project in Vault and removed all source control bindings, and now I get that error when I try to add the solution to Vault.

Help!

I can restore the database if necessary, but as I don't know if that is will fix it, I'd rather root cause it.

I'd suggest deleting the client-side cache, as it may be out of sync with the database. Close any open clients first.
