Slow Loading - needs a progress bar

Post by quitegood001 » Wed Apr 09, 2008 9:39 am

It would be nice if the status bar across the bottom of the window contained a progress bar. When I diff 2 moderate size files (one is 7000 lines, the other version is 5700 lines) it takes a good 2 minutes to load and appears to be hung during the load time, although in reality it's just "working" silently.

I experience this same problem when comparing folders on remote servers, over our LAN - the application eventually finishes, but while it's processing, it appears hung and unresponsive. A progress bar would be ideal for any compare task, or if not a progress bar, at least a "Processing" window that shows some kind of activity.

Thanks!

Yeah, it can be quite sluggish when doing a folder compare. And I do need to
put in a progress/processing popup of some kind. What I'd really like to do is
to push split the individual file compares within the folder diff into a background
thread and populate the folder window in the foreground and let the individual
results trickle in as they complete. But that's not a trivial change....

I have a bug logged for this and have added your note to it.

In the mean time, you might check your preferences and turn down some things.
Make sure that you're excluding sub-folders and/or file types that are generated.
Set the "equivalence mode" to "simple". These can help it take some short cuts.

Sorry I don't have a better solution at the present time,
jeff
