Slow saving in Visual Studio 2008.

Post by Octavius1701 » Thu Dec 04, 2008 4:46 am

Hi,

One of my developers is encountering a problem when saving files in Visual Studio 2008 when using the enhanced IDE client. Every save causes the program to pause for around five or more seconds. This only seems to be an issue when using the Vault client as other programs can write to the same drive (a network share) with no problems, and other non-bound projects in VS2008 are also fine. We've tried checking through the options and deleting the repository cache, but to no avail.

Has anybody come across this before and can perhaps shed some light on it?

Thanks in advance,
Gareth.

EDIT: Both client and server are running version 4.1.4.18402. VS2008 has SP1 installed.

Is the user's working folder on a network drive rather than on his local machine?

What kind of project is the user working on?

Is this a new problem -- was it working fine previously? If so, what changed?

Do other users also have their working folders on the network drive? If so, are they having the same type of problem?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply and apologies for my delay in responding - I've been out of the office for a few days.

Yes, the users working folder is on a network drive. The project is a VS2008 Visual BASIC .NET solution containing a class library and Windows forms client.

The issue only seems to affect one user - another user who is working on the same project does not have any issues. The problem has only arisen since we installed the latest version of Vault and the Enhanced IDE client last week - prior to this we had not been using the Vault-Visual Studio integration due to the fact that we found it too unreliable (it seemed to be almost constantly losing project bindings).

Thanks,
Gareth.

Is the other user also using a network drive for his working folders?

How large is the project -- how many files and folders?

Are there any errors in the Vault Server log that correspond to the slowdown? The Vault server log is sgvault.log and is in %windir%\temp\sgvault on the server machine.
