Hello,
in the 'fortress pending changes' under visual studio it's not possible to male a show diff on an unmodified item. The problem is that this window may be out of date if the file is modified outside visual; and the show diff would then be useful.
Moreover a show diff that would make a show diff on all the files that are pending would be great (eg: when no file is selected in the tab, clicking show diff could show differences like a folder but only with checked out items. The same on the GUI client would be great (pending change set, but it's not easy to have no line selected once one is selected)

I can log this and run it past the developer.
How are you modifying files without Vault noticing that something changed? Even if you don't use Visual Studio to modify the file, as long as the file is in a Vault working folder, a difference should be seen.

I made the file writeable and used notepad to modify the file (.vcproj)

A Refresh Source Control Status (under File->Fortress Source Control) inside Visual Studio will update the pending changes pane to reflect changes made outside Visual Studio. If this is something you need to do often, you can set a keyboard shortcut or make the Fortress Enhanced Client toolbar visible, there's a refresh button it it.
