Can't get Default.aspx to run

Post by dhjdhj » Tue Sep 02, 2008 1:03 pm

I just installed MS SQL Server Express, Vault, IIS, etc and am trying to get it to work on a virtual VM machine. I don't know much about IIS (where's Apache!) and my browser won't display Default.aspx and instead tries to download it.
I followed the instructions in http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... 05&GSSNB=1 to register the appropriate DLLs etc and the .aspx extension is indeed now showing that it's tied to the appropriate DLL but I still get prompted to download Default.aspx

Would appreciate some tips

Thanks,
David

First try this web page: http://<your server or localhost>/vaultservice. Do you get the home page?

Did you install IIS before the 2.0 .NET framework? If not, you will need to register that framework again.
C:\Windows\Microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis -i

Thank you --- that was part of the problem. However, there were also a bunch of permission problems that were preventing scripts from running.

I have it running now but I can't do the initial login - it doesn't seem to recognize my username so I can't do the beginning configuration.

Is there a way to reset the username for admin or do I have to reinstall from scratch?

Please take a look at your Vault server log file to see if there is a reason that the login is being denied (such as a failed database connection).

This would seem to be the pertinent entry in the log.

If you run the SQL command

select * from [sgmaster].dbo.users

do you see the "admin" user?

Yep --- and I'm now suitable embarrassed because I forgot that I had to use "admin" as the username, I was busy trying to use my usual userid. I am now logged in, so basically things are working. Thanks so much for the feedback.

Now, some motivation --- the reason I'm playing with Vault is because I have been using it for the last three years in the company where I worked (previously using SourceOffSite, etc) and I want to look at it for use with my new company, which is currently using subversion.

So I installed the free version on my home machine to play with it, which of course meant I had to install SQL, IIS, and all the other stuff that I'd hoped I'd left behind ( :D )

It's my understanding that I have a single-user license for free that I can use. However, the webpage is telling me that I have ZERO licenses. Does this mean I'm supposed to use the admin userid for regular usage or am I able to add a single non-admin userid for myself?

Thanks

Single-user installs only work with no licenses installed (so that part is correct). You can add one user other than admin (admin doesn't use an account).

Everything seems to be running fine. Thanks so much.

Do you happen to know whether you have a white paper that highlights the benefit of Vault over tools like Subversion?

Thanks,

We don't specifically have a Vault vs Subversion comparison, but we do have some white papers up at:

However, I know I asked for this before (related to Vault vs ClearCase a few years ago) and I would say that it would be extremely helpful for you to maintain a list of reasons why Vault should be used instead of various other systems....otherwise it gets very difficult to explain why people should spend lots of money instead of just using a free system.

The white paper on your site has no useful information for justifying Vault over other systems.

You're right, and we're working on documenting these sorts of comparisons. Unfortunately, there are lots of things competing for our time. We're currently working through our website to make sure that it gives the best and clearest information on what makes our products unique among all competitors. Have you seen some of the videos at http://sourcegear.com/fortress/video/ ?

There are always too many things competing for your time --- but consider....you can get essentially free sales help from users if you make it easy for them to tell the story...

As for videos, no I haven't, and I don't want to....watching videos is a poor use of time, when I can read a document covering the same content in about 1/10th of the time.

I will say "you're right" again. Thanks for helping me understand the use of these comparisons as a tool for helping a developer advocate for Vault inside their company. It hadn't occurred to me, and it's a really compelling argument. If you would like, please email me using the button beside this post, and we will send you a comparison document of Vault vs Subversion to show.

Yeah, that's exactly the trick --- and one can't expect the develoepr to be intimately familiar with all the other possible version control systems....so make it as easy as possible for people who have used your program before (or even those that haven't, but are considering it) to understand WHY yours is better!

I'll email you.
