SoS 4.2 on PowerPC Mac 10.5.1 Won't Even Open (No error msg)

Post by obfuscode » Fri Jan 18, 2008 10:25 am

Setup:
1.42 Ghz PowerPC Mac running Leopard 10.5.1 (Fresh Install!)
SoS 4.2 (downloaded off website 10 min ago)
X11 w/Color Mode set to Thousands as suggested

Problem: When opening SoS using X11, the "-xterm" window opens with "bash-3.2$" and that's it. That's all that happens. No error messages, no familiar SoS window (from 10.4), no login box, nothing.

Help...

Just to be certain, the X-Server is running before launching SOS, is that correct?

hey jclausius, yes the X-Server is running. I have all the latest OS X Leopard updates (if that matters).

I have tried the following:
- X11 running, open /Applications/SourceOffSite/sos with X11 (Open With Dialog)
- X11 running, open /Applications/SourceOffSite/sos with Terminal (Open With Dialog)
- X11 NOT running, open /Applications/SourceOffSite/sos with X11 (Open With Dialog)
- X11 NOT running, open /Applications/SourceOffSite/sos with Terminal (Open With Dialog)

results (in order of above listed tries):
- xterm window displays, nothing happens
- Terminal opens, terminal window displays, prints /Applications/SourceOffSite/sos ; exit; nothing happens
- X11 opens, xterm window displays, nothing happens
- Terminal opens, terminal window displays, prints /Applications/SourceOffSite/sos ; exit; nothing happens

This is the same on my PowerPC Mac at home as well also running Leopard 1.5.1 (also tried before the update on 10.5.0)

Perhaps this is a really stupid question. Do I need to have Java for Mac installed for this to work?

No. Java is not required for SOS.

When I run this, I have the XServer running, and then from the Chooser, I just go to /Application/SourceOffSite, and double click the sos file.

As do I.

I guess I'm just not meant to use SoS on my mac. Is the PowerPC build leopard compatible? I know a while ago you guys did an update for the Intel build but not the PowerPC one.

What is on the download site, should work. I don't have a PowerPC Mac in front of me at the moment. I do remember testing SOS on both Intel and PowerPC versions of Leopard as well as Tiger.

I'll need some time to round up all these resources to test things again.

OK.

1) I installed Leopard (10.5 only) and the X-Server app.

2) Started and configured X11 to use thousands of colors.

3) Restarted the entire machine (just to be safe).

4) From Finder/Applications/Utilities/ I started X11. This gives me the -xterm window just like you said.

5) SOS can be started from this terminal window by typing the command "/Applications/SourceOffSite/sos &"

I was having this same problem on a Dual 1Ghz PowerPC G4.

After my last attempt, I fired up Safari and found this thread; I spent several minutes registering, and as I was about to post "me too", suddenly the SoS window appeared. In all, it took somewhere between 4 and 5 minutes to present any kind of window...

Once you've logged into a source repository once with it, it starts up within a reasonable time frame. However, it crashes on me every time I try to select a folder that contains files.
The program 'sos' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
(Details: serial 76945 error_code 8 request_code 62 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Does it still crash if if you run

Code: Select all

export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1
and then re-start sos from the x terminal?

Sorry, shortly after my last post we ditched the G5 and got an Intel iMac where it works fine under 10.5.3 without any of the described issues.

Very strange.

The Mac based SOS clients are compiled from the same code (just on different processors). Theoretically, there shouldn't be any difference of one over the other.

In any case, thanks for the update.
