Vault causing VS2005 to be very slow

Post by pjsulin » Tue May 27, 2008 12:21 pm

I have been using Vault for the last 3 months and last week it started to lock up my VS2005. All operations take a really long time(10 secs to get a file, 15 secs to even see the file list when doing a commit all) and there are a lot of 2-5 sec freezes when editing a file. No one else who is using the same Vault Server is experiencing this problem and I am uncertain of how to begin to troubleshoot this problem. Any ideas?

Has anything changed on your local machine? Did you install anti-virus or other software that may be slowing things down?

One thing that may help is client-side logging.

Enable logging and sent us a copy of the client log plus the Vault server log for the time that corresponds to the client log.

If you are using the Visual Studio Enhanced Client with VS 2005, you can enable logging in VS under Tools->Options->Source Control->Integration Options. The log will be in your user's temp directory.

The only thing that changed on my machine was that I ran a registry cleaner, Glarysoft, about a week previous to the problem starting. The problem is specifically with the Vault enhanced Client, if I switch to work offline the slowness immediately is gone. I have enabled logging and will send them when they have a day or two of logs.

Similar problems with VS 2008

Post by Igor.Samoylenko » Wed May 28, 2008 10:59 am

I have similar problems with the Enhanced client in VS 2008. I have the same solution branched into two: one using the enchanced client and another using the classic client.

I can open two solutions in VS 2008 side by side and I can see the ehnanced client is significantly slower on simple operations: checking files in/out, getting latest version etc. VS seems to freeze after every operation for several seconds.

We have made some performance improvements in the Enhanced client for Vault 4.1.2, which is due out within the next day or two. We suggest you upgrade, then contact us again if you experience the same slowdowns.
