When I start the client, I get file statuses of 'unknown'. Is there a way to 'refresh' these? I tried to right-click looking for a 'refresh' or 'update' option but none found. I did do the 'refresh tree' but the file statuses do not change.

A file status of unknown means that there are files in the working directory that correspond to the names of files in the folder in the repository, but the working folder files were not retrieved with the Vault GUI client.
You can try to enable CRC's in the GUI client under Tools >Options > Local Files.
If that doesn't work, then a get latest will create baselines and update the file status.
