Visual Studio 2008 beta 2 + Fortress client
Hi
What's the status of compatibility of Fortress with the new VS2008 beta 2?
I only see the VS2003-compatible client in the Current source control plug-in drop down list in Options->Source Control in VS2008.
Thanks
Tom

Since the 2008 products are still in beta form, we don't plan to release any version of Vault or Fortress to support the beta versions of the 2008 products.
However, internally we will be using and testing with the 2008 versions that Vault will eventually integrate with or support.

It'd be cool to know what the official plan is when it comes to supporting new technologies. I remember it took some time to get Vista support in Vault after Vista was released, even though the Vista release could have hardly been a surprise. Is it SourceGear's official position that you will not even look at supporting a new technology unless it's officially released? Source control is pretty important, so it might affect our own decisions on when to adopt a new technology.

Well yes, exactly - without Fortress under VS2008 we effectively can't start coding .NET 3.5 projects making use of the new language features like LINQ - despite them being pretty mature and released with this "go-live" license.
Tends to pull me away from using Sourcegear, if I'm honest.

Another vote here for some idea of when VS 2008 integration will be available. We are about to upgrade from VS 2003, so we might as well skip 2005 and go straight to 2008, especially as BETA 2 has a go live license.
The lack of time frame is the only thing stopping me purchasing Fortress at the moment, because I want to get rid of VSS at the same time.

Tom, don't be so hard on SourceGear, they do have a good track record of being very good with updates and support (I have been licensed since Vault 1.0, I think). I understand them from a certain point of view, MS can change an API on a moment's notice and then that will break whatever SG has released as a preview, and then they have all of us yelling at them again, so not releasing too early makes some sense... But I think it should be a well-established rule, so we know what to expect...
All in all, I think it would give SourceGear a better image if they supported emerging technologies before they are released.
Plus there's always the stand alone client, we can always use that...

We're also paying customers - and while yes Microsoft *can* change APIs on a moments notice, it's unlikely that they would in this case in my opinion.
If SG put out a preview in the next few weeks that was labelled compatible with VS2008 beta 2, then we wouldn't be yelling at them when beta 3 / release candidate 1 / whatever comes out and Fortress broke. (I would bet good money on it continuing to work just fine anyhow - this of course is all pure speculation anyway)
I'm just conscious, given the fact that beta 2 is out and at "go-live", that we're effectively stopped from going ahead and writing software which takes advantage of new language features, which therefore gives us a competitive disadvantage in the market. One of the big reasons we went with Sourcegear is that they are a small ISV that's got a reputation for being nimble enough to respond quickly to its clients' needs.
The great IDE integration we've got used to with Sourcegear is the killer feature for us - we might as well switch to SVN without VS IDE integration.

Yes, we are discussing this. Supporting a beta is like trying to hit a moving target -- we want to wait until VS 2008 is closer to final form. We will probably have a beta of Vault later this year that will integrate with VS 2008. We don't have a specific target date as yet.
We're not ignoring you -- we're just busily working on making the current Vault release the best it can be.
