I can't log in with the Admin tool - it seems to get a 405 error. How should IIS be configured. It's really annoying that this product assumes a particular environment without verifying it.

try this... on the vault server machine:
- open a browser
- go to http://machine_or_website/vaultservice/vaultservice.asmx ( ex: http://localhost/vaultservice/vaultservice.asmx )

the vault server will work on any operating system supporting iis and asp.net. this includes versions of windows that run iis5.0, as well as windows 2003 server running iis6.0.
it could be a couple of different things related to your server -
1) do you have asp.net installed / configured with iis on the vault server? this component will be dependent on your server's os. in any case, the vault server is an asp.net web service and requires this component to operate correctly.
2) if you already have asp.net installed, did you happen to re-install iis on the vault server? sometimes this is the problem http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;306005.
