newbie install woes
Hi all,
Appolgize for the FAQ's here, but a brief search foray turned up more questions than answers.
The problem:
I get a (rather uninformative): "Installation ended prematurely because of an error" message when attempting to install Valut 3_0_5.msi.
The context:
Logged in via Remote Desktop, as local admin
Windows 2003 server, stand alone, not on a domain.
.Net 1.1 installed
SOS CE is running on this machine (shouldn't matter right?)
in IIS6, the "Default Web Site" is Stopped due to port conflicts with other things we are doing on this server. IIS works fine, but we are not using the "Default Web Site"
We are attempting to install the service in a directory other than the default, but have given NETWORK SERVICE full control of the target folder)
SQL Server 2000
The Appliation Pool Identity is set to "Network Service" for the Default Appliation Pool (not certain this is what is meant by the IIS Process Model Account).
I've read this: http://www.sourcegear.com/vault/support ... torial.asp and I think we comply, but may be misunderstanding some of the IIS Process Model Issues. (I've chosen NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE, but note that we do have an ASPNET account on the machine)
Any hints appreciated.
Thanks

At what point during the install are you getting this error?
Are you running the installer from the target machine?
If the installer got to the custom actions part, there should be a log file (vault_install.log) located in your temp directory (%temp%). Please send me your log file if you have one. You can use the email link at the bottom of the page to send me your log file directly.

>At what point during the install are you getting this error?
Right after the "Install Application Step" (which follows the IIS Process Model user selection step).
>Are you running the installer from the target machine?
Yes, but via a remote desktop desktop connection (logged in as a local admin)
No vault_install.log is being created. The error occurs immediately, I don't think it's getting very far.

It *sounds* like the installer can't run the custom actions for some reason.
Just to verify that your machine is set up correctly, please see the following KB article.

The process model user you choose *shouldn't* matter at the point you are getting the error.
Can you verify that there is a customactionsexe.exe file in your (installation_path)VaultService\bin directory? Just check to make sure it is there before you press OK in the error dialog for the rollback.

Thanks, that was helpful. Turns out we had the ASP .NET WSW set to "Prohibited". I set it to "Allowed" and issued an IISRESET.
But, alas, same result.
The (installation_path)VaultService\bin directory is empty just before rollback. No sign of any files/folders being added. The target install path has "Full Control" permissions set for: (the admin user I am logged in with, NETWORK SERVICE, SYSTEM) no other users have access.

OK, it sounds like either the installer doesn't have permission to install the files or you have a corrupt installer. The installer is dying at the point where it tries to copy the files to your system. The (installation_path)VaultService\bin directory is empty just before rollback. Do you have any anti-virus software or anything running that could be preventing the installer from copying the files? If so, disable it before you try to install.
Or try setting more lenient permissions on the folder just for the install.
If that doesn't work try re-downloading the server installer. Maybe something got corrupted in the download process.

Have you ever had Vault installed on that machine before?
Does the account you are logged in as have permissions to write to the registry?
Can you turn on .msi logging and see if the .msi log file reports anything more on the error you are seeing? See the following link for instructions:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223300
If you turn on msi logging a log file (MSIXXXX.log) will be generated in your %temp%.

Re: newbie install woes
I have run into problems with Remote Desktop installs and certain database utilities. The installs run fine when actually performed on the box or using VNC/PCAnywhere. I would suggest if possible trying that.lclarke wrote:Hi all,

Excellent idea. Just tried it. Got exactly the same behaviour. I really thought you had something there... So, this is an interesting bit of information, what ever the problem is it isn't MSTS.I have run into problems with Remote Desktop installs and certain database utilities.
